Teijin Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) announced on December 15 that it had begun to conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) of its carbon fiber to calculate its total carbon emissions. The company believes that this is the first in the industry.
Teijin has previously calculated the carbon footprint of its carbon fiber for sports, entertainment and industrial applications, and recently calculated its carbon fiber filament for aircraft applications, which makes it now possible to calculate the emissions of all its carbon fiber filament applications. The LCA method of Teijin has been certified by an independent third party organization according to iso14040 and iso14044 standards. It will provide customers with reliable emission data of teiren carbon fiber filament to help them evaluate their footprints. The company said its LCA helps identify carbon hot spots in the manufacturing process and evaluate emission reduction schemes.
Looking forward to the future, teiren hopes to expand its LCA scope beyond carbon fiber filaments, including intermediate products such as short fibers and prepregs. In addition, in cooperation with end product manufacturers and other customers, Teijin finally plans to evaluate the entire life cycle of its carbon fiber products.
