A group of researchers from the school of mechanical and aerospace engineering of Nanyang Technological University, in cooperation with the French special materials company Acoma (Columbus, France), have developed a safer bicycle helmet using a composite material combination. The company said that it provides the same protection as the current top helmet, but the price may be the same as the intermediate helmet. The helmet shell is made of Arkema's elium liquid thermoplastic resin (see "Arkema won the Pierre Potier Award for elium thermoplastic resin”)And reinforced with carbon fiber. The helmet is also manufactured through the molding process developed by NTU team and akoma engineers for elium. In general, it is reported that carbon fiber reinforced materials make the shell stronger, harder and less fragile than polycarbonate shell. It also increases the contact time of the helmet, that is, the total impact time of the helmet under the impact load.
